ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL – Authorities are investigating a terrifying highway shooting incident that took place on I-95 South in St. Johns County, leaving drivers shaken but miraculously unharmed.

According to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, a man was reported pointing a firearm at passing motorists and firing shots on the busy interstate. Multiple 911 calls flooded in, prompting a rapid response from both the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and St. Johns County deputies.

Deputies located the suspect’s vehicle and pursued it southbound near State Road 16. The chase ended when the suspect crashed his truck into trees along the highway, flipping the vehicle upside down.

A police K-9 engaged with the suspect before he was transported to a local trauma center. Authorities have identified him as 62-year-old Samuel O’Neal Gardner. His current condition remains unknown.

While no deputies were injured, one civilian vehicle was involved in the crash. The occupants were treated at the scene and released. It remains unclear whether Gardner fired his weapon at deputies, though he did point his firearm at them.

Gardner is expected to face serious charges in St. Johns County, with authorities also working with Jacksonville officials to determine if additional charges apply from where the incident began.
