ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Castillo de San Marcos National Monument has made history as the first U.S. national park to receive the Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation, recognizing its commitment to accessibility for autistic and sensory-sensitive visitors.

Celebrating a Milestone in Accessibility

To commemorate this achievement, a press conference will be held on Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. at the monument, featuring representatives from the City of St. Augustine, the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce (SJCCC), and the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

This certification is part of a broader SJCCC initiative to establish St. Augustine as a Certified Autism Destination, ensuring a welcoming environment for individuals and families with sensory sensitivities.

A Commitment to Inclusive Experiences

Superintendent Gordie Wilson emphasized the park’s dedication to accessibility:

“Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is proud to be the first U.S. national park area designated as a Certified Autism Center by IBCCES. Our staff is committed to the National Park Service’s vision of creating meaningful and inclusive experiences for all visitors. This is an important step toward building a more equitable and accessible environment where everyone can enjoy these national treasures.”

Specialized Training for Staff & Future Improvements

To earn this designation, park staff completed extensive training in best practices for assisting autistic individuals and sensory-sensitive visitors. Additionally, an on-site review from IBCCES will help guide future decision-making and program development, enhancing both in-person and online visitor experiences.

IBCCES Board Chairman Myron Pincomb praised the partnership, stating:

“We’re honored to collaborate with Castillo de San Marcos as they preserve this historic landmark while also ensuring accessibility for all. Their commitment sets a new standard for inclusivity in national parks.”

With this designation, Castillo de San Marcos continues to uphold its role as both a historic and forward-thinking site, making its rich history more accessible and enjoyable for all visitors.
