St. Augustine’s Port in the Storm Homeless Youth Center To Benefit

From Jan. 24 VENARDOS CIRCUS Opening Night

The Port in the Storm Homeless Youth Center, a program of St. Augustine Society, Inc., which includes St. Francis Housing Crisis Center (, will be the beneficiary of ticket sales for the first performance of the Venardos Circus ( on Wednesday, January 24 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre.

Venardos Circus finalized the partnership today with two weeks remaining before the first performance. The opening night performance, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., will offer a majority of ticket sales toward a current Campaign to support initial programming and building renovations for Port in the Storm, a new youth facility in St. Augustine that offers a safe place for unaccompanied/homeless youth in crisis.

According to recent U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) statistics, 34 percent of homeless individuals are age 24 and under and Florida’s teen homeless population is the fastest growing in the United States. St. Francis Housing Crisis Center has experienced a 54 percent increase in young people since 2010. The Port in the Storm youth program will include a day drop-in center staffed with professional case managers experienced in youth crisis as well as access to food, a shower, clean clothes and a safe caring environment founded on the principals of Positive Youth Development. Following renovations, shelter beds will be available for up to 16 youth at the Arapaho Avenue location.

“We are so excited to welcome Venardos Circus to St. Augustine and especially grateful to be the beneficiary of the opening night performance,” said Karen Hensel, assistant director of St. Augustine Society, Inc., which runs St. Francis Housing Crisis Center and Port in the Storm Homeless Youth Center. “Children have always had a love of the circus, so it’s a natural to direct some of the funding toward our new youth program, Port in a Storm, and to support helping homeless youth in our community.”

Venardos Circus is a unique, family-oriented traveling troupe that features a a big-top performance and is scheduled for 17 performances beginning Jan. 24 and running through Feb. 10. The Venardos Circus proudly features its own custom-made big-top, a classic red-and-white striped tent, with an intimate feel and seating for up to 300 guests. The St. Augustine shows will take place in the parking area of the St. Augustine Amphitheater, adjacent to the larger venue.

“These local programs do amazing work. We’re proud to be working alongside them for this special event,” said Venardos Circus founder Kevin Venardos. “Hopefully, our first performance will make an impact on their effort to help those who can’t help themselves. That’s always been the spirit of the circus.”

Created by former Ringling Bros. Ringmaster Kevin Venardos (veh-NARR-dos), the Venardos Circus wraps world-class circus acts into a Broadway Musical-style format that is called “the American Circus with the heart of a Broadway Show.” The group recently completed a series of shows in Las Vegas and arrives in St. Augustine with aerialists, acrobats, comedians, juggling, balancing, daredevilry and performers hailing from around the world. The Broadway-style singing and dancing adds another level of intrigue to the performance.

An interactive pre-show party takes place one hour before show time with opportunities to meet the cast, snap selfies and play games. The main event lasts approximately 90 minutes, with a brief intermission. Shows run Wednesday through Sunday for the entire engagement, with multiple show times on weekends.
