Attend ‘WaterSafe’ event, prepare for Summer fun

Flagler County Emergency Services is partnering with agencies and businesses throughout the county to provide an educational yet fun day of water safety instruction for families and children. WaterSafe 2017 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 3, at the Frieda Zamba Swimming Pool, 339 Parkview Drive, Palm Coast. “This event is geared towards families with children – infants up to 9-year-olds,” said Flagler County Public Safety Emergency Manager Steve Garten. “We want everyone to be safe and healthy as the peak swim season nears.”

Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children less than 4 years old, and it is the third leading cause of injury-related death for children under 19 years old. Most water-related accidents are avoidable by following a few simple guidelines. Flagler County Fire Rescue, Flagler Beach Ocean Rescue, Flagler County Schools and EM Pros (Emergency Medicine Professionals) will participate by providing instruction and informational literature about water safety and survival skills, sun safety, basic CPR and pool safety.  “Water safety and swim instructors will demonstrate hands-on lifesaving techniques,” Garten said. “We hope that parents and children will come in swimwear to take advantage of this learning opportunity.” Daytona Tortugas mascot Shelldon will be at the pool from 9 to 11 a.m. for photo opportunities. Two live mermaids will also pose for pictures from 9 a.m. to noon.

The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Swim diapers are required for children who are not potty trained. Others should bring swimsuits and towels and prepare to get wet.
